Ecological Restoration - History
Home > Ecological Restoration > History

The passing of the RMA in 1991 meant that local authorities assumed a mandate for environmental protection. The demand for the Ecological Restoration Industry was born at a time when government departments and local authorities were restructuring and downsizing their operational capability.

Throughout the decade a rise in public consciousness of the desperate plight of New Zealand’s natural environment was demonstrated by the dramatic rise in the number of landcare groups springing up around the country. Local governments in Auckland Region realised the need to restore the integrity of bush and natural areas within their care.

Te Ngahere

Te Ngahere began working in this field in 1996 blending our passion for New Zealand’s indigenous flora and fauna with landscaping type works and following in the footsteps of Forest and Remnant Habitat Restoration started by David Moverley (now Te Ngahere).

Early jobs included the restoration of the Clifftops Walkway for Northshore City and restoration of the Habour View Lowland Reserve in Te Atatu, Waitakere City. These early jobs provided formative experience and highlighted the need for ongoing care as opposed to ad hoc management.

Managing Director, Martin Freeman

Experience and Environmental Sensitivity

In 2001 The Ecological Restoration division of Te Ngahere commenced the Weed Control in Bush and Natural Areas programme for Auckland City. This programme allowed the follow up of works to be scheduled as necessary and required the use of quantitative and qualitative monitoring techniques.

This programme has been expanded to include 30 different areas throughout the city, testimony to the success of our approach. Te Ngahere has attracted a range of qualified staff from various backgrounds that have contributed to the development of our own philosophies, methodologies and techniques.

We currently have 4 operational teams and a consulting team providing planning and monitoring services as well as technical support to the rest of the organisation.

A comprehensive in-house training programme was developed along with several database tools to measure and monitor our performance. Ecological Restoration Workshops were developed to help spread some of the knowledge to community groups. Ecological Restoration now has a presence in the South Island and is looking to supply our expertise to a diverse client base.

The Ecological Restoration division of Te Ngahere is a progressive and dynamic environment. This is due to the commitment of a dedicated group of experienced and knowledgeable people.
