Ecological Restoration
The Ecological Restoration (ER) Division seeks to achieve effective
and efficient outcomes that enhance and restore the ecosystem with respect to
its health, integrity and sustainability.
ER Operations
The logistical planning and reporting on all contracts/projects is undertaken by our Operations Manager. He assisted by Field Supervisors who look after, a number of teams made up of an experienced team leader, 2IC and team members. The introduction of this structure has allowed us to become more client focused in our operational work and reporting.
Our work is predominantly with a range of public sector/local authorities and focuses on providing long-term solutions to invasive pest plant species. We have developed a framework that allows us to balance the budgetary constraints of ecosystem recovery with amenity values within an outcome based scenario.
We have a lowest toxicity policy and carefully balance the use of herbicides with best practice outcomes. Our reporting methods allow for us to monitor herbicide use over time/area and the framework allows for a decrease in herbicides over time.
Our teams are all trained in GPS use and, as part of our reporting process, we include track logs and mapping of the areas that we work in. The division has technical expertise in mapping and GIS and this has proved to be an excellent added value to our reporting whilst assisting the field crews on the ground. The resulting compiled data has allowed us efficiency and effective control in returning to remote sites and completing work units in difficult terrain and conditions.

Urban Ecological Regeneration
New Zealand’s biodiversity is being invaded by both animal and plant species that inhibit, sometimes to the point of extinction, the native flora and fauna. Nowhere is this more obvious than in an urban environment as garden escapes lead to pest plant invasions in parks and reserves with the result being a dull global homogeneity of New Zealand’s unique biodiversity.
Whilst we try and educate and assist the great work that community groups are doing, the control of these invasive species is an ever-growing issue. Our field crews are trained in best practice control methods and use a framework, which we have developed, to systematically eradicate invasive species (animal and plant). Examples of this framework are in use in parks and reserves around Auckland.
Each natural environment has its’ unique characteristics and ecological values as each client has their desired outcomes. Through effective and efficient use of resources we tip the balance in favour of the native regenerative process and work in partnership with the stakeholders to initiate and accelerate the recovery of the ecosystem. |
