Ecological Assessment of Pine Removal
along the Manukau Foreshore

Client: Auckland City Council
Project Duration: 2006 - Ongoing

As part of a 20 year vision to remove pine trees from the Manukau foreshore, Te Ngahere was contracted to carry out an ecological assessment of removing a number of pine trees from two different sites within Wattle Bay and Sylvania Esplanade.

Service requirements included:
  •  identification of ecologically important vegetation
  •  identification of invasive weed species that threaten the proposed site
  •  list resident bird species in the area
  •  determine what pines (if any) need to be retained due to their importance to resident fauna
  •  recommend site rehabilitation methodologies including weed control
techniques and appropirate native species for revegetation
  •  Inspect the site during tree removal operations to ensure that
     ecologically important vegetation is protected
