Whangaparaoa Training Centre Restoration Plan

Te Ngahere are preparing a restoration plan for the Whangaparaoa Training Centre,
a 175-hectare headland area at the tip of the Whangaparaoa peninsula. Under the
jurisdiction of the NZ Navy, the site presents a unique and exciting opportunity to
encourage the restoration of a prominent landscape feature and habitat link with
Tiritiri Matangi and Motuora Islands.
Service requirements included:
- programme objectives
- physical resource analysis
- site-specific management issues and threats
- cross boundary management issues regarding adjacent parkland i.e Shakespeare Regional Park
- floral and faunal species inventories (indigenous + exotic/ invasive)
- habitat management issues relevant to Skink Populations
- management unit identification
- digital mapping of key weed species such as Moth plant (Araujia sericifera),
Kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) and Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)
- timeline for the restoration programme
In addition to the restoration plan Te Ngahere was employed to
carry out a lizard survey throughout specified sites.
As a result a third resident species was confirmed and new
populations of the uncommon moko skink were discovered.
