Client: The Royal New Zealand Navy
Project Duration:   2004 - Ongoing

Te Ngahere are preparing a restoration plan for the Whangaparaoa Training Centre, a 175-hectare headland area at the tip of the Whangaparaoa peninsula. Under the jurisdiction of the NZ Navy, the site presents a unique and exciting opportunity to encourage the restoration of a prominent landscape feature and habitat link with Tiritiri Matangi and Motuora Islands.

Service requirements included:
  •  programme objectives
  •  physical resource analysis
  •  site-specific management issues and threats
  •  cross boundary management issues regarding adjacent parkland i.e Shakespeare Regional Park
  •  floral and faunal species inventories (indigenous + exotic/ invasive)
  •  habitat management issues relevant to Skink Populations
  •  management unit identification
  •  digital mapping of key weed species such as Moth plant (Araujia sericifera),
Kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) and Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)
  •  timeline for the restoration programme

In addition to the restoration plan Te Ngahere was employed to carry out a lizard survey throughout specified sites. As a result a third resident species was confirmed and new populations of the uncommon moko skink were discovered.
