Ecological Restoration of Ladies Bay
Client: Auckland City Council
Project Duration:
2004 - Ongoing
In November 2004 Te Ngahere completed a comprehensive Ecological Restoration Plan for the
popular Ladies Bay coastline to help coordinate management of the site with a long-term vision.
The plan includes a comprehensive site description with a vegetation survey and history of the site,
and covers a number of important issues including cliff stability and erosion, environmental
weed control and revegetation options.
|
Service requirements included:
- preparation of a comprehensive Ecological Restoration Plan
- ongoing control of environmental weed species throughout the coastline
- revegetation with appropriate coastal native species
- consideration of view shafts, landscape integrity, cliff stability and erosion
- monitoring of weed control sites and revegetation areas
- working with Auckland City, the local community and adjacent private landowners
- working to a nominated budget
- first class health and safety processes

Throughout the coastline covered by the restoration plan, the first phase of initial control has
been successfully completed. In January 2005, initial weed control operations commenced requiring
specialised rope access and careful planning to ensure a high probability of maintaining cliff
stability and preventing cliff erosion. Wattles have been removed and mulched by barging a
chipper on site. Pampas, bamboo, phoenix palms and acanthus continue to be controlled.
To date approximately 1,600 native plants have been used to revegetate
the site during the winters of 2005 and 2006.
