Environmental Weed Control on Offshore Islands

Client: Department of Conservation
Project Duration: 2001 - Ongoing

The Department of Conservation contracts Te Ngahere to provide "away" teams of ecological restoration staff to stay in huts or campgrounds and control environmental weeds on offshore islands in the Hauraki Gulf and Kaipara Harbour, including Motutapu, Great Barrier and Moturemu Islands.

Service requirements include:
  •  control of high priority weed species throughout conservation estates
  •  intensive grid searches, weed surveys / maps and inventory lists
  •  working to nominated budgets and timeframes
  •  working in isolated areas, extreme terrain ( e.g requiring Abseiling ) and inclement weather
  •  regular comprehensive reporting
  •  first class health and safety measures

These contracts have been monitored by DOC staff and control outcomes have seen Te Ngahere continue to be invited to carry out further initial and follow-up control work on offshore islands administered by the Dept.
