Weed Control in Bush
and Natural Areas Contract (WCBNA)

Client: Auckland City Council
Project Duration: 2001 - 2006

Our mission statement with regards to this contract is:

To provide cost effective invasive weed control and rehabilitation planting throughout the designated bush reserves within the Auckland isthmus over a five-year period.

The objective is to implement an operational plan that forms part of a wider strategy to control invasive weeds in Auckland city parks.

The operational plan has evolved over the life of the contract to:
  •  provide annual qualitative photo-point monitoring (2001-02)
  •  provide annual quantitative vegetation monitoring (2002-03)
  •  develop and introduce a Best Practice Database System (2003-04)
  •  develop and introduce a Daily Diary Data Management System (2004-05)
  •  develop and introduce a Spatial Database System (GIS) (2004-05)
  •  add new parks to the contract (2004-05)
  •  develop and introduce a staff Performance Management System (2004-05)
  •  develop staff training modules specifically for forest restoration (2004-05)
  •  develop staff success profiles to track individual staff training
     requirements and achievements (2004-05)
  •  adapt systems to a forest restoration phase approach (2004-05)
  •  align all databases to provide robust systems for historical data archiving,
quantitative analysis, and operational planning (2004-2005)
  •  develop phase forecast model to predict future reserve costs and the ability to determine the
introduction of new parks into the contract (2005-06)

These improvements to the WCBNA contract over the last five years have made the contract a more robust operation, bringing the industry on par with other more easily quantified products from other industries.

These improvements have been made possible because of steady long-term partnerships with Auckland City and other clients, a pool of very experienced pest plant managers, dedicated ground and technical staff, and long-term local knowledge and “ownership” of the WCBNA Reserves.

Auckland City shares these improvements with all our clients, benefiting from shared experiences with the Department of Conservation, the Auckland Regional Council, Manukau, Waitakere, and Whangarei District Councils, the Royal New Zealand Navy, and other land administrators.
