Canopy Walkway, Whangarei

Client: Whangarei District Council and Richardson Stevens Consultants
Project Duration: October 2000 - January 2001

Situated in the A.H.Reed Memorial Kauri Park, three kilometres northeast of Whangarei, the canopy walkway, designed by Richardson Stevens Consultants, functions as a unique walkway link across a forested valley.

Reaching a maximum height of 13 metres above the Paranui Stream, the walkway stretches for 72 metres from bank to bank, connecting two existing walking tracks.

A key design and construction feature of the walkway is the decking that could "float" horizontally in respect to the glue-lam beams, allowing the walkway to be constructed so that it flows between the forest trees. As the walkway subtly sways in the wind, it provides a true treetop forest experience for walkers.

Service requirements included:
  •  airlifting of materials and the precision positioning of poles via helicopter
  •  extensive use of Industrial Rope Access equipment and cableways during construction
  •  working with large glue laminated beams supported on a
combination of single pole cantilevered columns and pole trestles
  •  no trees or vegetation be removed during the construction of the walkway
