Mangrove Boardwalk, Hobson Bay, Auckland
Client: Auckland City Council
Project Duration:
March - June 2002
The mangrove boardwalk built by Te Ngahere at Hobson Bay offers walkers a unique
perspective, providing public access to previously non-accessible muddy areas
of the mangrove saltmarsh environment, and all weather
access along the coastal foreshore.
Effectively linking two Auckland City reserves,
the boardwalk is constructed with marine grade timber and stainless steel fixings,
and weaves for 425 metres along the coastline.
A 1.5 metre clear span, a viewing platform and passing bays were included in the
design to increase the functionality of the structure.

Service requirements included:
- given the sensitive work environment, all phases of the project were undertaken without machinery
i.e. handtools only, including a hand-held auger to excavate the 500 footings
- sections of boardwalk had to be constructed over the lower limbs, and around the bases of mature pohutukawa
- handrails were kept to a minimum, and were only present where fall height was a safety issue
