Wenderholm Regional Park, North Auckland

Client: Auckland Regional Council
Project Duration: October 2000 - Ongoing

This case study is an example of combined structure and track construction along the cliff-tops of the southern end of Wenderholm beach. It consists of a total of 302m of boardwalk and steps combination, 248m of track and 1 bridge, linking an existing track, providing a loop-track with breath-taking views over the ocean and beach.

Stage One involved a 150m boardwalk and steps combination. A 120m track and 80m boardwalk, a bridge and 35m of steps comprised Stage Two. Stage Three is yet to be completed, which will consist of 72m of boardwalk and 128m of track, providing a link track to the lookout.

On completion of the project visitors to the regional park will be able to access the more remote and steeper areas of the park via a network of tracks and structures, designed and built to harmonise with the environment, and thereby enhance a visitors experience.

Service requirements included:
  •  consultation was undertaken with local Iwi and the Natural Heritage Department of the
Auckland Regional Council, prior to any work commencing
  •  all structures were "design and build", with all consents obtained by Te Ngahere
  •  all materials were airlifted in to the site by helicopter due to access difficulties
  •  structures had to be constructed in close proximity to mature puriri, taraire and kohekohe, requiring
diligence and patience to ensure the roots of these species were not damaged in any way
