Kelman Hut & Copeland Shelter

Client: DoC, Aoraki ~ Mt Cook, Canterbury Conservancy
Project Duration: April 2004

During April 2004 Te Ngahere South completed upgrade projects on the Kelman Hut and Copeland Shelter, within Mt Cook National Park.

A new ventilation system, along with roof flashings was installed at the Kelman Hut, which is located near the head of the Tasman Glacier. A new ventilation system was also installed at the Copeland Shelter, along with rock anchors and cable tie-downs to secure the shelter.

Service requirements included:

  •  working in an alpine environment, with its associated altitude and weather issues
  •  the effective use of industrial rope access techniques as a safe and cost efficient
     alternative to erecting scaffolding
  •  the transportation of all materials and staff to and from the site via helicopter
  •  a team experienced in working in alpine environments, and appropriately equipped to
walk out from the site, in the event of weather preventing helicopter access
