Lake Matheson

Client: DoC, West Coast / Poutini Conservancy
Project Duration: September - December 2004

This project involved the removal of a 150m section of boardwalk around the shore of Lake Matheson, and the construction of a new section of boardwalk in its place. Positioned within flaxland at the head of the lake, the new boardwalk complements the walking track that extends around the entire lake margin.

As Lake Matheson is situated within a World Heritage area, recognised as having "outstanding universal value", only contractors with a proven track record were invited to tender for the project.

Service requirements included:

  •  the use of a portable pile driver to drive piles up to 6 metres deep into the swamp
  •  strict adherence to a policy of minimal environmental disturbance
  •  transportation of 40+ tonnes of timber, material and equipment to the isolated site, via 80 helicopter trips
