Mt Somers Hut

Client: Doc, Raukapuka, Geraldine
Project Duration: January - July 2004

Te Ngahere completed the Woolshed Creek Hut in March 2006. It is located in the foothills of the Southern Alps at an 880m altitude, just south of Mt Hutt.

This newly constructed hut replaced a historic hut, which was dismantled. It is the first of two huts located along the Mt Somers 3-day walkway.

Construction of the hut was non-continuous given the weather delays and access conditions.

The completed project was a 165.24 m2, 26-bunk hut, which included a common room, a covered veranda, internal and external seating.

Te Ngahere also built a separate toilet block with a 3-phase environmentally friendly suilage system.

Service requirements included:

  •  ability to plan and work in an extreme and dynamic weather conditions with
winds of an excess of 120km/hr
  •  remote location with transportation of all equipment on a 40-minute 4x4 wheel drive
     along a marginal track
  •  combined team effort from both Te Ngahere North and South staff
